Chief Medical Officer
Kim Smith-Whitley, MD joined The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in 1992, as a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellow. Dr. Smith-Whitley started her faculty appointment with CHOP in 1996, with board certifications in both Pediatrics and Hematology/Oncology. In 2004 she was promoted to Clinical Director for the Division of Hematology at CHOP and became Director of Comprehensive Sickle Cell Disease Center and Medical Director of Medical Ward 5E at CHOP.
Today the CHOP Sickle Cell Clinical Program is one of the largest in the United States and provide comprehensive care and services to more than 700 patients at the Main Hospital and approximately 200 patients at Pediatric & Adolescent Specialty Care, Voorhees, Pediatric & Adolescent Specialty Care Center in King of Prussia, PA and other off-campus locations.
Dr. Smith- Whitley attended George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC and completed her residency at the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Her special interests are sickle cell disease, bone marrow failure and general hematology. She has received countless awards and honors as well as served on numerous boards and committees including the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc. as past Vice Chair of MARAC (Medical and Research Advisory Committee).
