Kermit B. Nash Academic Scholarship

Purpose/Goal of program

To reward academic achievement of individuals with sickle cell disease and to promote their pursuit of educational goals.

Number of Awards, Amount, and Duration

4 awards for a total of $5,000 for 2 Academic Semesters. Award will be disbursed at $2,500 per semester (Fall and Spring) based on academic status.

Who Qualifies

Graduating high school seniors
United States citizens and permanent residents
Individuals with sickle cell disease (individuals with sickle cell trait are not eligible)

Qualification/Selection factors

  • Grade Point Average: Minimum of 3.0 unless special hardship demonstrated

  • General academic achievement and promise

  • SAT Scores

  • Leadership and community service

  • Quality of essay

  • Severity of academic challenges/obstacles posed by sickle cell disease

Maintenance of Scholarship Status in College

Student must remain in “good standing” by definition of college.  Official college transcripts required each semester prior to disbursement of award.  One Semester of academic probation forfeits the scholarship.

  • Students in regions not covered by local chapters, a Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, or a Sickle Cell Program may request applications, in writing, from the SCDAA National Office.
     

  • All applicants must include physician’s certification of sickle cell status       
     

  • Scholarship Committee will review all applications and select finalists
     

  • Scholarship Committee will conduct telephone interview of final 8 candidates prior to selecting award winner.

 Essay Topic

Candidates will be asked to write a personal essay, not to exceed 1,000 words, on any aspect of the impact of sickle cell disease on their lives or on society.
