Celebrating Diversity Within the Sickle Cell Community:
Commitment, Innovation, Practice
The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc.’s 46th Annual National Convention, held October 10-13, 2018, was a huge success! We had 620 registrants from around the world including Canada, Sweden, Suriname and Ghana! Thank you to our attendees for joining us for this event. We hope you are renewed and refreshed by the people you have met, learned from, and connected with in Baltimore!
SCDAA worked hard to bring you an educational, inspirational, and informative convention. We thank our convention planning committee co-chairs, Dr. Biree Andemariam, our chief medical officer, and Dr. Lewis Hsu, our vice chief medical officer, and also the committee members, and the SCDAA
board and staff. We are grateful to our speakers, sponsors, our new National Media Partner, EBONY, and our convention media partner, Blackdoctor.org. All of you play a critical role in the success and longevity of this annual convention! See some our convention highlights below.
Lonzie Lee Jones Patient Symposium
For the second year in a row, our attendees enjoyed a “Hollywood Squares” themed Lonzie Lee Jones Patient Symposium. The session was moderated by former SCDAA Child Ambassador Tiahna Hughes. SCDAA Celebrity Ambassador Dexter Darden and sickle cell advocate Temilola “Lola” Odesina were the hosts. The event provided a fun way to learn about sickle cell.
Keynote Speakers Provided Important Research Information
Dr. M. Dawn Nelson was the Charles F. Whitten, MD Lecturer. Dr. Russell Ware was the Clarice D. Reid Lecturer, and Dr. Julie Kanter was the Special Lecturer. We thank them and all of our wonderful speakers for their informative presentations and sharing their knowledge with us.
Generation “S” Rock the Block Party
Novartis is partnering with Jordin Sparks and SCDAA to launch Generation S, a national SCD storytelling project that will help rewrite the SCD story for generations to come. SCDAA thanks Novartis for the partnership to increase awareness about SCD, for hosting the “Rock the Block” Party with Big Tigga and DJ Trauma and for having Jordin Sparks attend our Gala. New Childhood Ambassador Announcement SCDAA attendees met our new child ambassador Kiarra Roseburgh at our convention OpeningCeremony. Tiahna Hughes, SCDAA’s former National Child Ambassador, gave brief remarks and passed the torch to Kiarra with the “crowning of her” with a tiara. Kiarra said she is excited to represent SCDAA and one of her initiatives is a pen pal program she started to communicate with children around the world about sickle cell disease (SCD).
Unity Soiree Gala
The Latin American experience and Red Carpet at this year’s Unity Soiree brought together the sickle cell community for a night of dancing, awards, recognition and music by the Joe Falero Band! Grammy ® nominated singer, film and Broadway star Jordin Sparks, and our Celebrity Ambassadors Dexter Darden and London Knight spoke at the event. Although they could not join us, we thank Celebrity Ambassadors Billy Garrett and Markus Golden, and Senators Corey Booker and Tim Scott for providing us with their welcome videos. Many thanks to Pfizer and all of our sponsors for supporting the Unity Soiree and our 46th Annual National Convention!
